This collection of upbeat and hard-edged rockers from 45 Souls was engineered by Jimmy “Bonks” Buonforte and mixed and mastered by Mike Hagler. We welcome back the superior musicians Gerald Dowd (drums), Steve Doyle (electric guitar), and Brian Wilke (pedal steel), as well as the keyboards of the great Alton Smith. Topping it all off is the artwork design by Ken Mills, who created a memorable comic image for each song, making this album a musical and visual treat!
Lyrics
I’m a Little in Love
When people say
They’re all lost in a hazy
Whatever they say
Then they wanna
Take it back
I don’t know
But could they all be crazy
And I don’t care
If they’re looking at me
‘Cause I’m a little in love
Women say
They want a man to be their only
And men agree
Then they wanna
Take it back
I don’t know
It’s better than being lonely
You might agree
If you were looking at me
‘Cause I’m a little in love
Goodness, Grace
My spinally is all tingly
And scratch my back
I just don’t wanna
Take it back
Let’s go down slowly
Now we’re really feelin’ really
So come with me
And together we can be just a little in love
Gonna Break My Heart Again
We’ve been here before
I learned that pain is much more
Than heart hardening
It’s being afraid
That you’re gonna make
Me a fool
And once on you shame
There’s no one else to blame
And I’m sorry
But I won’t complain
For a lesson in pain
Out of school
And look me in the eye
‘Cause I know you
And you’re saying that was then
But I know
Just where we’re going
Gonna break my heart again
Now I learned before
That a heart is a poorly
Told story
And you’re just afraid
Of a man who’s made
His heart tough
And twice on me shame
There’s no one else to blame
And I’m sorry
But I’ve given you up
The last crack up
Was enough
And look me in the eye
‘Cause I know you
And you’re saying that was then
But I know
Just where we’re going
Gonna break my heart again
Look me in the eye
‘Cause I know you
We’re not even gonna pretend
And I know where you’re going
You won’t break my heart again.
You and Me
This ecstasy doth unperplex
We said, and tell us what we love
We see by this it was not sex
We see we saw not what did move
But as all several souls contain
Mixture of thing, they know not what
Love these mixed souls doth mix again
And makes both one, each this and that
And whilst our souls negotiate there
All day the same our postures were
You and me
When love to one another so
Animates two souls
We then, who are this new soul, know
Of what we are composed
To our bodies turn we then, (we then) that so
Weak men on love revealed may look
Love’s mysteries in souls do grow
But yet the body is his book
And whilst our souls negotiate there
All day the same our postures were
You and me
And if some lover, such as we,
(Have heard this) dialogue of one
Let him still mark us; he shall see
Small change when we are…. are to bodies gone
The Truth
You’ve got your character plenty
Full of possibilities
But you’re out of disguises
And your surety
You don’t know the half about it
Or understand a fraction of the truth
You’re tripping over the
Consequences now that you’ll embrace
And you’ll recover
Erase every disgrace
Now you’re walking around
Making all kinds of sounds
And you’ve run out of lies
And you don’t even know why
That you can’t understand the truth
Such political plenty
Every possibility
But your heart is empty
Now stretch that smile for me
Lose
Well, what do you say
About friendship
And how do you feel about pain
And what do you know
I won’t mention all the things
That I can’t say to you
We’re dead, we don’t want anything
‘Cause there’s too much to do
Between me and you
There’s too much to say
Hey, hey, hey
And I feel bad
About the times we’ve had
But I never chose
To lose
What do you say
About feelings
And how do you feel about me
And what do you know
About needing anyone
To look after your feelings
Beyond you there is no one
‘Cause there’s too much to do
Between me and you
There’s too much to say
Hey, hey, hey
And I feel bad
About the times we’ve had
But I never chose
To lose.
The Whole
She’s the whole of this place
And the space next to me
She’s each line in this face
She’s the nascent in me
She says there
Is still time, Boy
For life to be fine, Boy
It’s gonna be good for me
There’s a hole in this world
There is work to be done
Every seed in the furrow
Is a seed that’s begun
She says that
Every start, Boy
Just might break your heart, Boy
But it’s gonna be good for me
Every day is the make up
For each day that’s been following me
And every night I will wake up
To find her there, she’s lying next to me
She’s the patch for this whole
She’s the stitch when I bleed
The exchange of my soul
Is the courage in me
She says that
It’s a start, Boy
So give me your heart, Boy
And it’s gonna be good for me.
Freight Train
Tony’s a survivor
Did two tours in the Gulf
Watched the dying eyes of men he’d killed
Saw praying in the blood
Spent four months as a P.O. War
In a small hole in the sand
Now he lies alone in a V.A. home
With the world inside his hand
Love is a freight train is love
It’s tender and it’s tough
It’s smooth and then it’s rough
It’s never but it’s always enough
Jenny met a man she’d search for
Since eternity
He took her to the mountains
And he took her to the sea
He taught her how to fly
But never how to land
Then he left her in eternity
With the world inside her hand
Love is a freight train is love
From below and from above
It’s jackal and it’s dove
It’s never but it’s always enough
At 35, Chris almost died
In an overdose of speed
And years before he’d had a child
He thought he’d never need
On the day of his survival
The father to the man
Was his boy who stood before him
With the world inside his hand
Love is a freight train is love
It’s indifferent and it’s just
It’s oil and it’s rust
Betrayal and it’s trust
Stardust and pure lust
It’s boon and then it’s bust
It’s never but it’s always enough
Round Shot
High above the line
And crashing in the air
You’re half out of time
Always half aware of
Everything you’re not
When you’re nothing at all
Better send up that round shot
Better send up the cannonball
Here comes the heat
And the bleeding red
You fear your courage
You’re alive, you’re dead, and
Everything you’re not
When you’re nothing at all
Better send up that round shot
Better send up the cannonball
How on the earth will you overtake them
When they’re coming from everywhere?
How in the air will you escape them?
And what will you dare?
One final push
With your strength failing
One final cry
One thought prevailing
Everything you’re not
When you’re nothing at all
Better send up that round shot
Better send up the cannonball
