Promise shows off 45 Souls’ interest in Americana, with a mixture of rock, folk, country, and country blues. Gib and Mike team up here with engineer Jimmy “Bonks” Buonforte and musicians Gerald Dowd (drums), Steve Doyle (dobro, mandolin, and electric guitar), and Brian Wilke (pedal steel). As this was our last album mastered by our late, great friend Blaise Barton, we are thankful that the production reflects his magic touch. Mostly composed during the isolation of pandemic lockdown, the songs explore a wide variety of human relationships, while the album is a unique mixture of many of the musical styles that have made 45 Souls such a favorite!

Lyrics

D2 (When I See You Again)

Good to hear you’re happy
Can’t wait just to see you again
All about all the good times
All about all the noise we made
All about the glad silence

I heard about your brother
He was a good man who ran with the bad
And I bet now he’s happy
And I hear that his wife’s doing fine
And I hear that she’s married

And how about your mama?
Gonna cry when I see her again
All about how we’re lucky
All about all the plans we made
All about how the honeymoon fades
And you know that I love you

The Reason of It All

Talking ‘bout a hand-me-down,
Walking-‘round sick in my head
It won’t bring me down
What’s to fight gives me strength instead

I cannot turn my eyes down
Look away from it all
There’s the thing that must be done
Whatever comes

Been shuffled around
A kinged checker in a square
My means condemned
Blamed when I can’t defend my ends

I cannot throw my faith away
Or the meaning of it all
There’s the thing that must be begun
Whatever’s won

I cannot turn my eyes down
Look away from it all
There’s the thing that must be said
With no regret

I cannot turn my eyes away
Look for answers in my soul
Now that I know what must be done
And the reason of it all

Bar Light Nights and Game Show Days

The lights, the lights they shine so brightly
Round and round and round we sink
And tonight the lights are blinking
Blue and orange and green and pink

Bite the night off, spit it out!
Some fighting, riding, feel, don’t think
And the lights, the lights are pulsing
Red and blue and pink

Then you say there’s too much going on
It’s much too much to be
And then you tell me that you can’t go on
Being here with me

Then you tell me that you’re going far
As far as the next bar
Then you tell me that you’re feeling fine
Six, seven, eight glasses of wine

And you’re
You’re drinking through your game show day
It’s the soap opera way
The way you say, you’re going away, etc.

Tonight the lights keep flashing brightly
Stay awake, don’t pause, don’t blink
We’re crazy through the hazy light of
Yellow, green then blue then pink

Gnaw the nub of night and SHRIEK
Into a night as black as ink
‘Til the dawning day descending
Sky grows purple, orange then pink

Song

Cobble all those pieces of words
Borne from the abyss
The construction is the song
The song, an artifice

This soft parade of meaning made
This coarse and stubbled life
All will fly through the sky and I
Skillfully wield the knife
I do

After solo, after verse
Each polished, gleaming part rehearsed
Now I the colder, song on the shoulder
Ready to disburse
For free
I’m free

Chicken Man

Chicken Man said take another dollar
For the thoughts that roll ’round inside your head
Chicken Man said take another hour
And he said that sometimes he is dead

The breakers on the shore repel the violence
And the dike inside my head leaks instead
Chicken Man kicks at the sand for hours
And he says that sometimes he is dead
And he says that sometimes he is dead

So we said
We don’t even know why
Why we’d say our last goodbyes
We must never say we was wrong
If just one single light would burn
It’d shine all around the world
Put the power of one word in a song

Chicken Man looks at the surf for hours
Says there must be more outside my head
Chicken Man said forget about the dollar
As the numbers they diminish when you’re dead
As the numbers they diminish when you’re dead

In Those Dreams

You cut your love into a diamond
Burnish your heart into a pearl
With that diamond you cut other diamonds
With that pearl you stand against the world

I offer all fantastic visions
I offer all those daring dreams
In those visions I see our reality
Through those daring dreams I redeem me

In those dreams
All is as it seems

You tell me every strange confession
You tell me every desperate lie
And you keep on in protecting me
And that hopeful look of love in my eyes

And then in the end we’re in our arms again
Protection from a fair and fickle life
Carefully the pearl inside the diamond
Deep inside the center of my eye

Sometimes my dear
You’re left here
With my body far away
You remain
Here all alone
Until my body finds its way back home

Sometimes my love
Love will rise above
Sometimes a heart will run away
Then I stay
In my all alone
Until your heart can find its way back home

Promise

How far can I walk
In those shoes?
The laces are gone
And they are flapping, too
I gotta make it home
With those walking blues

And all the trouble now
Always been right here
Injustice and calamity are
Everywhere
I need some action and prayer
So I can see

I gotta get up today
I gotta hear the news
I gotta win yesterday
Or tomorrow I’ll lose
Gotta make it home
With those talking blues
Where I must stand and be accused

Who will last will be the first thing
Who will first will be the last thing
And we’re suddenly trapped
Inside a thunderclap
Waiting for the storm to pour down
